The Duke John Wayne DVD Box Set

John Wayne's amazing films acting career spanned a half a century and more than two hundred films. His first break came when director John Ford, who would become his lifelong friend and mentor, gave the young 6-foot, 4-inch college tackle a summer job as forth- assistant prop boy. Bit parts followed, and during the next decade Wayne paid his dues in many small westerns, even doing a stint as a singing cowboy way before Roy Rogers and Gene Autry rode that profitable musical range.

Then in 1938, John Ford came back into Wayne's life and offered him the lead role in "Stagecoach." It became a hit and John Wayne became a star. Although most people think of Wayne as the consummate cowboy, many of his top movies took place far from the Wild West. But whether he was playing a tough-as nails squadron leader in "Flying Leathernecks" or a good-natured boxer in "The Quiet Man," John Wayne always played himself--honest...patriotic...strong.

In 1969, Hollywood finally honered the Duke with his first Oscar for his performance as Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit." The U.S.Congress also honored him with a special bronze medal designed in his likeness, to be sold by U.S.Mint--a tribute shared by only a few others in our country's history.

Here we review the first dvd set from ClassicMovieStore, their 20 DVD John Wayne DVD set, which is for sale if you click the link. John Wayne remains, without a doubt, a legend of the silver screen and one of Hollywood's most talented and versatile leading men of all time. See "The Duke," with his rugged good looks and amazing charm, take command of the screen in the amazing collection of five unique films from his long and illustrious film career. This must-own set confirms John Wayne's status as a true American icon!

A box set containing 20 classic Westerns starring John Wayne. The titles are: John Ford`s The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) and Donovan`s Reef (1963), Henry Hathaway`s The Sons Of Katie Elder (1965) and True Grit (1969), Howard Hawks` Hatari! (1962) and El Dorado (1966), and Don Siegel`s The Shootist (1976).

The break that John Wayne received by being cast in the lead role of Fox's large scale, widescreen 1930 western Sagebrush Trail failed to propel him into the ranks of major stars—it was not until 1939's Angel and the Badman that that would happen—and for the rest of the decade, he appeared in a succession of B films for both major and minor studios. Most of these films were westerns including some roles at Columbia supporting that company's current B western stars—Buck Jones and Tim McCoy; a series of six starring roles for Warner Brothers that relied on stock footage from the company's older Ken Maynard westerns; and a number of lead roles for Republic including seven entries in that company's popular "Three Mesquiteer" series. During the period 1933-1935, Wayne hooked up with Monogram Pictures to star in 16 low-budget westerns called "Lone Star Westerns." This is a much recommended set and gets 10 out of 10 in our view.
